Woman in profile with ship and bottle on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A woman's face in profile sits inside an oval rope frame, with red flowers woven into her dark hair and a sailing ship on the left. Below her, a red bottle and shell motifs sit at the base of the design. The outlines are bold and dark, with flat fills in red, yellow, green and pink and some soft shading on the skin tones.

The brig came round the breakwater at the turn of the tide with half her canvas gone, and Mags Tregenza was on the quay before the bell had stopped ringing, a red-waxed bottle in each fist. Her brother Jory was somewhere aboard that wreck, or so the last letter had claimed, and nobody in Porthgwidden had yet told her otherwise.

The sailors threw ropes. A boy in a torn oilskin caught one and hauled, and the hull knocked against the granite steps with a sound like a dropped anvil. Mags pressed a bottle into the nearest pair of hands. "Is Jory Tregenza alive?" The man shook his head, then looked at the wax seal and shook it again, slower. "He gave me this for you, miss. Said if the sea took him I was to put it in your hand and tell you the rowan was ripe."
She broke the seal with her thumbnail. Inside, rolled tight, was a page from the ship's log, and folded into the neck was a pressed sea-pink from the cliffs above the cove, the same flower she had tucked into her hair every morning since their mother died. Jory had written only three lines: the cargo of brandy was gone over the side off the Lizard, the rest he would say in person, and she was to keep the kettle on.
Mags looked up at the sagging rigging, the gulls, the dark water shining with lamp oil and broken shell. She laughed until the sailor thought she had turned to weeping, then she wiped her eyes on her apron and went to find the kettle. The second bottle she corked and set on the windowsill, where it caught the morning light and glowed like a coal.
