Elephant head and mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed elephant head faces forward, with a curled trunk, tusks and wrinkled skin built from stippled dots and fine lines. A mandala of pointed petals sits behind the head and frames the top and sides of the design. The tattoo is in black and grey on a pale forearm, photographed against a white garment and wooden panels.

The elephant came up the Saddle of Ilun in the third week of snow, which is the wrong season for anything with ears that size. My cousin Tenzin swore she was a dream brought on by the thin air. She walked at the head of the mule string with her head low, as if the path were a text she was reading, and her trunk swung between her tusks like a rope that knew exactly where it was going.

Nobody owned her. The last caravan master had lost her at the lower hut, to a fever or a debt, depending on who was drinking with you. What I remember is the ring of pointed petals painted on her brow in faded ochre, which the frost had never managed to wash away. Each night at the shelter she stood with her face to the rock wall and her trunk folded against her chest, and each morning the petals looked sharper than the night before.
On the ninth day a boy from the village below climbed up with a lamp and asked whether she was the one who had sung the glacier open. I told him no. But when the wind dropped we heard it anyway, a low note rising from under the ice, and she lifted her trunk and answered it in a voice that made the mules lie down in the snow.
We crossed at dawn. At the top she turned once, looked back down the valley we had climbed, and stepped off the edge of the snow as if it were a stair. I went to the lip with the rope still in my hands and saw only a long white slope and, far below, a grey shape moving through the blue shadow of the rocks, the petals on her brow catching the first light like a small sun. Tenzin still says she was a dream. I have the rope yet, and the end of it is cut clean.
