Hare, snake and blackberry on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A hare and a snake coil together down the centre of the arm, with a blackberry branch and rhododendron blooms climbing over the shoulder. Fine hatched linework and stippling give the animals, scales and leaves their shading, while dotted geometric lines frame the design and an eye within a triangle sits at the base. The design is entirely black and grey against pale skin and a plain background.

The sausage rolls had gone limp under their cling film by the time Dee Ferrier finally peeled her name badge off her cardigan and stuck it to the back of her hand instead. Thirty years since Holbrook Comprehensive, and nobody had thought to bring a spare pen. Marnie found one at the bottom of her handbag, and it was the only useful thing she did all evening.

They had been the two who skipped games to walk the lane behind the sports field, counting blackberries into their blazer pockets and staining the linings purple. Dee still talked about the hare they'd startled out of the stubble, how it had sat up on its hind legs and looked at them as if they were the odd ones. Marnie remembered a grass snake sunning itself on the wall where the bramble grew thickest, and Dee saying it was a sign, though she never said of what. Now Dee stood by the trestle table turning a bangle round and round her wrist.
'You still go up the lane?' Marnie asked.
'Every October. The bushes are dripping this year.' Dee's eyes went past her to the window, where the car park lamps buzzed. 'Mr Pryce is here, did you see? Took his glasses off to look at us, as if we might be a rumour.'
They left before the raffle. The lane was black and smelt of wet nettles. Halfway along, where the brambles met the hawthorn, something moved low in the verge, long-eared and unhurried, and then it was gone. Dee stopped. 'Still here,' she said, as if the lane had been waiting for them to come back and admit it. Marnie picked a blackberry, and its juice ran cold down her wrist, and neither of them wiped it away.
