Nell had been up the ladder since before the gulls woke, and the elephant on the hoarding still had no face. Tomasz had laid in its grey body himself back in March, a wash so careful it looked like weather, but the head had been left to her, with orders to make it look as though it was thinking about something. She had a tin of madder red, a jar of teal, and a brush with three hairs left.

The wind came off the Humber at four and knocked the teal pot over the edge of the scaffold. It hit the board in a spatter, a wet blue-green burst across the top of the head where the ears should go. Nell swore in the Polish she had picked up from Tomasz and climbed down expecting to be sent home. Instead he stood in the wet grass with his cap in his hands and looked at the board for a long time.

"Leave it," he said. "Paint round it. The elephant was always going to be a bit splashed. Look how it sits in there." She looked. The red she had laid down for the trunk ran into the teal like a line of stitching, and the black pencil ring she had drawn around the whole head suddenly looked like a frame someone had thrown paint through on purpose.

By dawn the banner was up over the ticket booth, the wind pulling it taut. Tomasz paid her in cash and a paper bag of sugared almonds. She walked to the bus with paint drying on her wrists, the small pink star she had dabbed in the corner still tacky, and the elephant looking down over the car park as if it had always meant to be splashed.
