Biomechanical gears on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows gears, pistons, a cylinder and metal plates, with skin peeling back at the edges to reveal the mechanical parts beneath. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong highlights on the metal and soft grey gradients. The mechanical forms run diagonally down the forearm, and a bracelet sits on the wrist below, with a faint outline tattoo visible at the top of the frame.

Joan Pell, who had come to Scarborough to mend the hotel laundry and stayed to mend everything else, found the cellar door unlocked on the third Tuesday of the month and went down with a torch.

The cellar had not been a cellar for years. Someone had cut the back wall open and fitted a great iron engine into the rock, its flywheel as tall as a man, its pistons slick with a grease that smelt of sea salt and hot brass. Gears the size of dinner plates sat in a cradle of riveted plate. Joan put her hand on the nearest cylinder and felt it tick, slow and patient, the way a sleeper's heart does when you lay your palm on their chest.
She climbed back up without the torch. In the kitchen Mrs Pardoe was turning sausages with a fork, and she did not look up. "You found the works," she said. "Good. Somebody has to wind it." Joan took the key from the hook by the door, the one stamped with a little anchor, and by morning every clock in the house had started again, one after another, up the stairs, as if the building were waking to find itself still needed.
