Engraved anchor with rope and quote
Black and grey · Flash
A vintage-style anchor is drawn in fine black linework with hatched shading on the shank and flukes. A rope coils around the shaft, and soft grey smudged shading sits behind the anchor. Two lines of serif text sit below the image on a plain white background.

The brass anchor came in on the late Tuesday service, wedged under seat fourteen and wrapped in a bus timetable. Marjorie Vell turned it over under the strip light of the lost property office at Stennick Halt. Someone had bound a length of hemp round the shank, and the knot was a good one, the kind a fisherman ties without looking. The tag on its string was blank except for a pencilled arrow pointing at the flukes.

In nine years at the Halt she had logged over a thousand objects: prams, a left-handed glove, a glass eye in a matchbox, a wedding ring with a date engraved inside. People lost the small things they could not stop holding. The anchor was heavier than it looked. When she lifted it by the loop at the top, it nearly dragged her wrist down onto the counter, and she laughed at herself, alone in the little room with the kettle ticking.
A man in a navy jacket came in just before the 6.40, out of breath, and described it exactly: the rope, the arrow, the weight. He did not reach for it. He sat on the plastic bench and said his father had worn one like it on a chain, that the old boat had gone down off the Lizard, and that he had been carrying something of that weight in his coat for thirty years without once putting it down on a table.
Marjorie slid the anchor across the counter with both hands. He picked it up, gripped the rope, and his shoulders dropped as if he had been waiting for permission. Through the window the 6.40 pulled out towards the sea, and she heard him say it felt lighter once it was somewhere else. She filled out the form, ticked collected, and dropped the blank tag into the bin.
