Engraved rose and bud on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large open rose with a closed bud and several serrated leaves is tattooed across the upper arm. The design uses dense fine hatching and cross-hatching to build shading on the petals and leaves, giving an engraved, botanical-print look. The work is entirely black and grey, and the rose fills most of the frame against plain pale skin and a grey sleeve.

The copper plate had cooled on the bench by the time Ada Pellow saw the mistake, and it was her own. She had cut the rose facing left when Mr Gilchrist's order wanted it facing right, so every petal curled against the grain of the catalogue page. Forty sheets were already inked and drying on the rack. Mr Gilchrist would have them scrapped by Monday.

She sat with the burin in her fist and the gas lamp hissing, cross-hatching the leaf veins the way her father had taught her, one fine line laid beside another until the shadow held. Outside in Clerkenwell the carts rattled over the setts. She thought about the nursery in Hertfordshire where the rose had been raised, a bush with no name yet, sold on the strength of a drawing that nobody had checked against the bloom.
Near midnight she pulled a proof and held it to the window. Reversed, the open flower looked less like something unfolding than something folding in, its outer petals drawing the eye down to the bud that had not yet decided. She could not cut the plate again in time. But she could let the paper tell the truth it had already told.
She sent the sheets out unchanged. Gilchrist wrote back one line: the customers will think it a new variety. Ada pinned the spare proof above her bench, the rose turned toward the wall and the closed bud pressed beside it, and let the shadows keep their own counsel.
