Mandala and rose on an upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A dense arm piece centred on a symmetrical mandala-style flower, with a shaded rose and leaves around the elbow. The design is built from stippled dots and fine lines, giving soft gradients across the petals and leaves. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark top, with the rose lit on the right and the mandala at the centre.

The lace pattern is due at the chapel bazaar on Saturday, and you have pricked only half of the circle. Your mother says the holes must be even or the bobbins will catch, and she has no patience for the lamp smoke that clings to your fingers. Your father has been on the back shift for nine days, and the scullery smells of paraffin and wet wool. You bend over the parchment with the bodkin, the way Nana taught you, one small opening at a time, until the paper is so full of holes that the lamp light comes through in pale grey specks.

The rose is the hard part. Mr Haldane at the colliery office wants one for the Whitsun raffle, a proper rose and not a daisy, and he has promised a ham to whoever can draw it. You have sketched it four times on the backs of wage slips, and each time the petals come out like hands cupped round nothing. Nana tells you to stop trying to make it lovely and make it count: every dot a breath, every breath a shift come up safe. So you prick the outer ring in the dark, counting under your breath, and when the whistle goes at the top of the lane you keep your eyes on the paper.
On Saturday the cloth goes on the trestle beside the tea urn. People stop at the centre, run a thumb along the raised edges and say nothing, which in this village is the highest praise there is. Haldane buys the first square for his wife. Your father, home at last with coal still grey in the creases of his knuckles, lifts a corner to the window and holds it there so the light falls through every hole at once. The flower goes soft and bright, like a sun seen from underground. He folds the square into his breast pocket without a word, and you let him keep it.
