Eucalyptus branch with gum blossoms on a shoulder blade

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A eucalyptus branch runs diagonally across the skin, with long drooping green leaves, pink gum blossoms with fine stamen detail, and small seed capsules along the stem. The leaves use soft green and yellow shading with some darker tones, giving them volume, while the blossoms are lit in pink and red. The design is framed by bare skin on the left and lower edge, with the branch extending up towards the shoulder.

Sit down on that bench before you fall over, and mind the nettles, they've taken the wall since your grandad died. No, not there. Come round where the light gets through.

That tree by the glasshouse was never meant to live in a Dorset valley. Your great-aunt Maud brought a seedling home in a tobacco tin in 1931, after two years nursing in a town with red dust and gum trees that dropped their bark in ribbons. Everyone said it would freeze the first hard winter. It didn't. It only sulked, and then it grew like it had something to prove.

The blossom came out the second spring, pink as the inside of a shell, and the bees went mad for it. Maud stood at the kitchen window with her hands in the sink and cried, and nobody could work out whether it was homesickness or the sheer cheek of a plant that refused to be dull. The capsules dried on the stem like little wooden cups. She kept one on the windowsill for forty years and told anyone who asked that it was for luck.

Then one March the wind came off the Channel sideways and took the top half clean away. We found her out there at dawn, sitting in the wreck with a saw across her knees, not cutting, just holding it. She said she'd been waiting for it to say what it wanted. Silly woman. I went and fetched the tin, and we planted every fallen leaf we could find in a row along the south wall. Half of them took. That's where you're sitting, and that's why the leaves hang the way they do, reaching for a sun that isn't theirs.
