Pink lilies across a shoulder blade
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows several pink and red lilies with shaded petals, speckled throat markings and green stems, with buds along the left edge near the shoulder. The shading is soft and blended, giving the petals a rounded, three-dimensional look. The flowers are arranged in a diagonal cluster across the back, with the lower group sitting below the shoulder blade.

Brannoch had been counting the speckles on the lily throats since dawn, because the Chancellor wanted fourteen blooms for the bridal hall and the glasshouse at Vell held thirty-one. "Fourteen," said the steward, tapping his ledger with a ring. "Not fifteen. The Queen dislikes a crowd of anything."

Brannoch cut them one by one with the bone-handled knife his mother had left him. Each stem came away green and wet, and each bloom went into the basket with its pink petals curling back like the lips of a shell. The rose-red ones were for the hall. The paler buds along the edge of the bed he left alone, because buds do not count until they open.
On the last morning the steward came back. He stood in the doorway looking at the bed, then at the basket, and said nothing about the three buds Brannoch had tucked into his waistcoat. Outside, the bells of Vell began, slow and heavy, for the procession that would pass beneath the high window before noon.
That evening Brannoch walked the long road home along the canal with the buds in his pocket, damp through the cloth. In his kitchen he set them in a jar of cold water beside the window. By morning one had split, its six petals open and the dark freckles scattered inside like words written in a hurry. He told no one. He let the bread burn and watched it.
