Eye and spiral clock on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm carries a realistic eye at the top of the frame, with its lashes and iris shaded in fine grey tones. Below it, a clock face with Roman numerals curves into a spiral, with the numerals fading and breaking up as they wind towards the centre. The shading is smooth and black and grey throughout, against a dark blurred background.

Hush now, and mind the lamp, because this part is about time coming apart in a sailor's hands. The Marigold Tern left Bristol with a chronometer in her binnacle, a brass clock the colour of old tea, and nine weeks out the Roman numerals on its face began to wear away like shingle under a tide.

Hester Vane kept the navigator's book and she counted them every watch. Twelve became eleven, then the four went soft and the seven broke in half. The face curled inward as the ship rolled, the numbers winding down a spiral toward the hub until nobody aboard could say where noon was. The captain blamed the damp. The cook blamed the Thursdays.
Then the boy out on the bowsprit, a lad called Nat Ferrow, told her the painted eye below the figurehead had turned in the night to look back along the wake. Hester laughed at him and went up to see. The eye had been painted by a dead carpenter, all grey and patient, and it was watching the sea behind them the way you might watch a debt you meant to collect.
So she took the clock off its gimbals and set it by that eye instead of the sun. Every dusk she held it up to the lashes and waited. Slowly the numerals came back, one by one, starting at the hub and climbing out of the spiral, until the last one stood at the rim and the Tern was steering true. Nobody asked her how. Some things a navigator only has to watch.
