Pocket watch and gears on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A pocket watch with Roman numerals and its open movement is shown on the forearm, with interlocking cogs and a numbered gear sitting beside it. The shading is black and grey, with strong contrast, metallic highlights and soft shadows that give the metal parts depth. The design fills the frame from the wrist to the elbow, with the watch face at the centre and the gears curving around the limb.

Father stopped every clock in the house the night before the wedding, which is how I knew he was frightened. Nine of them, mantel and cuckoo and the tall walnut case in the hall, and he went round with his little brass key like a man putting out candles. "Time is for the living to fuss over," he said, and then he fussed over the pocket watch on the kitchen table for an hour.

It was his father's, a silver thing with Roman numerals worn soft at the edges, and the back cover had come loose years ago. He wanted it cleaned for Saturday. He wanted it in my hand when I walked up the aisle, he said, so that someone in the family would be keeping proper time. I said the vicar had a clock on the wall, and he said the vicar's clock was for the vicar.
So I sat with the loupe in my eye while the gears turned under the glass, the wheels meshing one into the next, each tooth waiting its turn. Near the end the balance wheel caught a little, and I felt the old fear that I would break something that could never be mended. Then it ran. Tick, steady as a heartbeat, the second hand sweeping past 92 and round again.
On the morning, I pinned the watch to my dress with a safety pin and felt it knock against my ribs all the way down the aisle. Father never said a word about the stopped clocks. He just nodded at the watch and then at me, and I understood that he had restarted the house for my sake, and the tick had been his way of saying yes.
