Eye design with "Look for the Girl" lettering
Lettering · Mixed · Flash
A pen-and-ink drawing of an open eye with a central pupil and a radiating iris in teal, blue, green and orange tones. Large, ornate script reads Look for the Girl across the top, with smaller lettering reading with the Sun in Her Eyes beneath the eye. The black linework sits on a pale cream background, with the eyelashes and lid lines drawn in fine strokes.

Dear Col,

We pitched on the Harrowgate rec on Tuesday, and the wind has been trying to take the big wheel off its bolts ever since. Pelham still swears the ghost train is haunted, though he says that about anything he cannot be bothered to fix. I am on the chair-o-planes now, which means I spend the afternoons watching the queue and the evenings watching the sky.
Remember Nan's saying, the one she chanted when we got lost round the market stalls? Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes. I thought it was nonsense until Thursday, when a girl in a yellow mac came up to the ticket hut asking for the lost property tent. Her hair was full of wet leaves and she had a paint tin tucked under one arm. She did not look lost. She looked like she had been carrying something all week and was waiting for someone to notice it.
She had painted an eye on a sheet of hardboard, open wide, with rings of colour round the pupil like the sheen on a petrol puddle. Pelham wanted it for the front of the freak tent. She said no. She said it was for whoever could see it properly, and she would know them when they came.
I did not tell her I had been looking for her since we left Doncaster. I just held the flap of the tent, and she laughed at me, and the sun came out from behind the wheel. It is still out now. Come up to the August fair and I will show you the eye.
