Eye within clouds in a diamond shape

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed pen drawing of a single open eye with a dark iris and pupil, set within a cluster of billowing clouds that form a diamond shape. The linework uses fine cross-hatching and stippling for shading, with diagonal hatched lines filling the lower point. The image is in black and grey on a pale paper background.

Hester had been up the north tower since before the bells in Kendal, and the wind had not yet decided what kind of day it wanted to be. She sat on the cold lip of the window embrasure with her ink pot wedged between two loose stones and her book open on her knee, sketching the weather the way her father had taught her, cloud by cloud, because the shipping office paid a shilling for every accurate page.

The castle had been falling down for three hundred years and nobody had hurried it. Half the curtain wall had gone to sheep pens. Only the tower and a sliver of chapel still held a roof, and the chapel's east window still held a carved eye above the sill, worn so smooth by rain that she had to trace it with her thumb to be sure it was there. Her father said the masons had put it there to keep watch on the valley. Her father said a great many things after the second bottle.

Today the cloud came in low off the Solway and bunched itself over the fell in heaps, shouldered and curled, and when the sun broke through in one hard blade it lit a single hollow in the mass, round and dark at the centre. She drew it fast. The ink ran where her hand shook. When she looked up again the hollow had gone, but the bank of cloud beneath it had settled into a diamond shape, pale on top and streaked grey beneath, rain falling from the point like hatching on a page.

She closed the book and went down the stairs without looking back, because her father's rule was never to stare at weather that stares back. At the bottom, the chapel window was wet, and the eye above it was wet too, and she did not stop to see if it had opened.
