Mandala compass rose design sketch
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black pencil and ink drawing of a compass rose built around a layered mandala. Layered petals and rings of fine scalloped and dotted detail surround a central rosette, with the points of the compass extending outward. The letters W and S mark the compass points, and the shading is light and sketchy on a cream, aged paper background.

The snow had buried the lower windows of the Hollin Fell inn by the third day, and Ada Vane had stopped pretending the thaw was coming. She sat at the long table with her father's surveying pencils laid out in a row, a sheet of cream paper pinned flat under a cup of cold tea. Outside, the wind worked at the shutters like someone looking for a way in.

The landlord's boy, Tom, brought her the old chart from the parlour, foxed at the edges, with a compass rose drawn across the middle. Rings of petals opened around a dotted centre, and the points ran out to the paper's edge like spokes. "Your father drew that," Tom said. "He said anyone lost could find north from it if they were patient." Ada had never known her father to draw anything but contour lines.
She traced the W with her thumb, then the S at the bottom, where the letters had worn soft with handling. The shading ran lighter on the eastern side, where the drift had banked against the glass. She reasoned it out: the snow had come from the north-west all week, so the lee lay south-east, and the road down to Ridding would clear first. She marked the route in pencil, one petal at a time.
By dusk she had a line she trusted. She pinned the chart to the inn door, facing outward, and by morning the drifts had hardened into a path under the crust. Tom walked her as far as the first gatepost and stayed there, watching. When she looked back, the inn's lamp was the only light for miles, and she knew which way was south without needing the paper at all.
