Eyes framed in acanthus scrollwork drawing

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed pen drawing shows a pair of realistic eyes set within a dense mass of baroque acanthus leaves and scrolls. The eyes are shaded with fine stippled and hatched linework, while the foliage is rendered in crisp outlines with graduated grey tones. A hand holding a fine liner pen is inking the design at the lower right of the sheet, so the drawing appears to be in progress.

The ceiling of the Lantern Rooms had been bare since the fire, and the committee wanted it finished before the spring dance. Ada Quill, who drew for an ironmonger's catalogues, took the work for four shillings a day and a bottle of Indian ink. She climbed the scaffold with a fine liner, and by the third week the acanthus leaves were curling out of the plaster the way they did on the old Italian tombs, heavy and shadowed and full of hidden corners.

Every evening, when the hall emptied and the gas was turned low, she found she had drawn one more curl than she meant to. On the Thursday she set two eyes in the middle of the scrolls, because the foreman's wife had asked for something up there to look down on the dancers. She shaded them dot by dot, stipple upon stipple, until the lids seemed to lift when she stepped back.

At the Saturday dance the floor was full and the waltz went round and round. Nobody looked up except the fiddler's boy, who swore the eyes followed the couples and blinked when the music stopped. Ada laughed and told him he had drink in him. But when she climbed up the next morning to ink the cheek, she saw that the leaves on the left side had crept down past the cornice, reaching into the hall like fingers feeling for a partner.

She left the eyes as they were and went home. The committee paid her in full, and the Lantern Rooms have never once been short of partners since. If you stand beneath the chandelier and keep very still, you can feel the ceiling counting you.
