Woman portrait with roses in curled hair
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A pencil-style drawing in blue ink of a woman's face in profile, looking upwards, with tear lines beneath one eye. Two large open roses and voluminous curls of hair frame the face, with heavy shading on the roses and the hair. The design is drawn on a cream paper ground in a single blue ink with faint construction lines still visible.

Inside was a single line and a ticket for the Liverpool train leaving at six. She read it twice, then folded it small and tucked it into the rose nearest her cheek, where the petals were tight and damp with the heat of the room. When she looked up, the mirror showed a woman with dry eyes and a sharp chin, and she decided that was enough for one night. She went to find her coat.
