Fairy silhouette on a crescent moon

Black and grey · Flash

A solid black silhouette of a seated fairy with butterfly-like wings, perched on the curve of a large crescent moon. A trail of small stars and sparkles drifts from her raised hand, and thin swirling flourishes extend from the moon's tips. The design uses bold solid fills and open negative space with no shading or colour.

I have been thinking about the thing you said at the gate, that the moon looks like a bitten biscuit this month. It does. But when I went out with the lantern at midnight there was a little silver trail hanging over the top field, like someone had flicked sparks off a cigarette, and it made me think of Mab Corrigan's girl who used to sit on the stile and blow dust off her hand for luck. Nobody believes that sort of thing in the Parish Council, and I don't either, mostly. Still, I stood there longer than I should have.

The ewe is up on her feet now, bleating like she has a grievance. Come Sunday I will bring the good tea and we can talk about whether the vicar's new hat is a sin. Mind the stile on your way over, it has moved again.

Love, Margaret
