Barn owl on a post with full moon
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A barn owl with shaded plumage sits on a weathered wooden post, facing the viewer. A large full moon with soft shading sits behind it, framed by ornamental swirling vines and dark, sketchy branches. The linework is fine and layered, with stippled shading on the owl and moon, and the composition is set on a plain white background.

The owl had taken the fencepost at the bottom of Harrow Lane before anyone thought to lay the aisle runner. My job as the groom's brother was to keep guests off the lower field, so I spent the afternoon walking the hedge with a thermos of tea, watching it watch me. Maud, the bride's gran, swore barn owls brought news, and she wanted to know which way it had turned its head when the vicar's car pulled in.

By dusk the moon had come up over Coldharbour Wood, fat and yellow as a dropped crumpet, and the owl had not moved. Dan's nerves were worse than the weather. He kept patting his pockets for the rings, then his phone, then the rings again. "It's only a bird," I told him. "It's only a bird that's waiting for you to get on with it."
When the speeches started, the owl lifted off without a sound and dropped over the hedge, pale as paper against the dark. Everyone turned to look. Maud pressed my arm. "Right," she said. "That's them settled, then."
Later, when the band had packed up and the barn smelt of spilt cider and wet grass, I found a single grey feather tucked under the post, its tip darkened by rain. I put it in my breast pocket beside the spare buttonhole. Maud was right about one thing. Dan and Priya are still married. The owl never came back to that post, but I still look for it on the fence every time I drive past.
