Fairy silhouettes in a bare tree on a thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two solid black female silhouettes, one taller and one smaller, set within a bare tree with spreading branches, exposed roots and a few small butterflies and leaves. The linework is bold and the figures and tree are filled with solid black ink, with no visible shading or grey tones. The design fills the centre of the frame against plain skin and a textured grey carpet in the background.

Dear Pippa,

I nearly didn't go to the reunion, and I'm glad I did, if only because Mr Hadley still called me Joanna Mills as though the years had never happened. Afterwards we stood in the car park with the heater roaring and the windows steaming up, and you asked whether the oak behind the lower field was still standing. It is. They fenced it off last spring, but the council never got round to felling it, so it stands there bare as a coat hanger, its roots bursting through the mud.

You'll remember what we told the year sevens: that the tall one dancing through the branches was Hester, and the small one hiding low in the trunk was her daughter Wren, who wouldn't come out until the butterflies did. Nobody believed us, which suited us fine. I walked over to the fence after dinner, half drunk on cheap fizz, and I swear the smaller shadow on the trunk leaned towards me, as if she were waiting to be asked something.

So I asked, out loud, like a fool in my good coat. Nothing answered except a crow. But on the bus home a single brown leaf landed on my knee, dry and curled, though every tree I'd passed had been stripped for weeks. I've pressed it inside this letter. Write back and tell me what Hester said to Wren before she climbed back into the wood. I think I've lost the end of the story, and I rather want it back.

Love, Joan
