Flower bouquet on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bouquet of stylised flowers and leaves rises up the forearm, with a large round bloom at the centre and smaller blossoms to either side. Bold black outlines are filled with dense dotwork stippling in the petals and seed heads, while the leaves and stems use solid black and fine hatched detail. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against pale skin, photographed straight on with a turquoise towel behind the arm.

By the fortieth day out, the biscuits had gone soft and the captain had started counting the water barrels twice each morning. Tomas kept one hand pressed to the lining of his coat, where a packet of oilcloth sat against his ribs. Inside were the seeds his sister had pressed into his palm on the quay, dark and hard as peppercorns. She had told him they would only grow if they stayed dry, and that a seed carried across water becomes a kind of promise.

In the fifty-third week, a squall tore the foresail and the sea came over the rail in a green wall. The lamp went out. Tomas lost his cap, two buckets and most of his nerve, but the packet stayed where it was. When the storm broke, the mate found him lying in the scuppers with his coat buttoned to the throat, and the first thing he asked was whether the land was in sight. It was not. It would be nine more days before the lookout shouted that there was rock ahead.
The island had no people, only black stone, salt grass and a spring that came out of a crack below the cliff. Tomas went up alone with a trowel he had borrowed from the cook. He pushed the seeds into the damp earth at the spring's edge and covered them with his own hat. Nothing happened for a month. Then a single green stem pushed up, and by midsummer it had opened into a whole crown of blooms, each one dotted at the heart like rain falling on still water.
The crew cut them for their caps and tucked them behind their ears when they sailed on. Years later, Tomas came back as a grey old man on a bigger ship, and he saw the bloom from three miles out, long before the cliffs showed. The sailors on that voyage said the flowers were the first thing they smelled, and that they steered toward the scent the way others steer by a lighthouse. Nobody on board asked whose garden it was. They only asked how far there was left to go.
