Fantasy flash sheet with tree, moth and bottle

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A sheet of several tattoo designs on white paper, including a bearded tree face wreathed in leaves, a moth with orange wings, and a green hillside with a round door set inside a glass bottle. Other motifs include a witch hat with a city scene, a waterfall over dark rock, a bare tree and a looped knot, with some calligraphic script at the left edge. The shading is soft and realistic in places, with colour ink on the moth and foliage and greyscale on the tree face and hat.

Up at Carrow Gap, where the stream drops off the black rock in a white rope, the old people said the oaks had once walked down to drink. Nobody living had seen it. But in the hard frost year a girl called Ysolde Brand went up the pass to fetch back her brother's goat, which had wandered over the top and not come home.

At the summit she found the trees standing in a ring, their bark furred with moss and leaves growing from their shoulders. The oldest of them had a face like a sleeping man's, and it asked her what she wanted. She said the goat. The tree said the goat had gone down the far side to a house the shepherds had forgotten, and it gave her a moth to follow, orange as a coal, which flew ahead of her through the snow.

The house sat inside a glass bottle on a shelf of stone, its round green door set into a grassy hill, a brass lamp burning in the window. The goat was asleep by the hearth beside a man in a tall grey hat who did not look up. Ysolde asked how anyone had got inside a bottle. He said the same way the river got over the rock: by being patient and taking the long way round. She asked for the goat. He said she could have it if she could tell him what the waterfall was saying. She listened and heard only water.

She said, "It wants to come down." The man laughed for the first time in what might have been a hundred years, and he took the cork from the bottle's neck. The goat walked out, the moth settled on Ysolde's wrist, and the hill folded back into its own quiet. Every spring after, the stream over Carrow Gap ran a little louder than the year before, as if something long kept was finally allowed to fall.
