A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had counted eleven swallows in the rigging of the big top before the first wet morning of October, and she told nobody, because Mr Varley would only have sold the poles to pay for diesel. Now the canvas hung grey over the field at Haverly Moss, and the crowds were a handful of farm children and a man with a lurcher.

Dora, who had once swung from the high bar in a sequinned bodice, kept a tin of old stones in her coat pocket. She pressed a dark garnet set in a brass cup into Nell's palm and said it had belonged to a woman who used to read the moon from the roof of the wagons. "Wear it when the birds go," she said. "They always leave before the moon does."

On the last night the band played for nobody and the lamps guttered in their glass. Nell climbed the rope ladder to the rigging with the stone clenched in her fist. The swallows were already restless, sliding in and out of the seams of the roof, and a thin crescent hung over the flat fields like a paring of fingernail. She pinned the garnet to her collar and watched the birds turn once, then twice, and pour out through the tear where the canvas had split.

By dawn the wagons were loaded and the pavilion lay folded on the wet grass. Nell found a feather caught in the hem of her coat. She did not look up to see whether the birds had gone east or south. She only knew the moon had stayed behind, pale over the hedges, waiting for someone else to notice it.
