Feather and ornament tattoo across neck and chest
Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a neck and upper chest tattoo showing a feather on the left side and a symmetrical ornamental motif on the centre line, with a lotus-like shape at the base. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading in the feathers and the ornament. The ink is black and grey, and the design follows the curve of the neck and collarbone.

The guard at Kessel Bridge would not let the feather pass, so Marta laid it on the wooden rail and waited for him to look at it properly. It was a grey flight feather, longer than her hand, and the vanes had been combed back into place with a bone comb that morning. He said the rules allowed papers, seals and coin. She said the rules had been written by men who never crossed the river in the dark.

Her grandmother had told her the feather came from a heron that nested in the reeds on the far bank, and that any feather a heron lost in those reeds belonged to whoever found it first. Marta had found it in March, the week the water rose. Below the bridge the river ran brown and quick, and at its edge a stone shrine stood with a lotus carved on its lintel, half sunk in silt. Every family on the village side left a bowl of rice there. Nobody on the other side remembered why.
The guard turned the feather over in the lamplight. Then, without a word, he lifted the barrier arm and stepped back. Marta understood that he had once had a mother who kept heron feathers in a tin box, and that he would never say so.
She walked across with the feather held flat against her palm, past the salt sacks and the dripping lantern, and when she reached the far bank she set it down among the reeds where it had come from. The heron, when it rose, did not look back at her.
