Ornate lotus mandala on the nape of the neck

Dotwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A back view of a person with short dark hair showing a symmetrical lotus-style mandala tattoo centred on the nape of the neck. The design is built from layered petals, scrolls and fine decorative lines, with stippled dot shading filling the petals and a row of small dots running down the centre. Three dangling drop motifs hang from the base of the design against a plain white textured wall, and the tattoo is entirely black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lotus pattern had been drawn on the back of a bread bag in the spring, and Mirela kept it folded in her apron pocket until the paper went soft as cloth. Her grandmother had sworn that a mandala must be built from the centre outward, one ring at a time, or the spirits would not find the door. So every evening after the bakery shut, Mirela sat at the scarred table in the back room with a pencil and a jar of mismatched buttons, and she placed each petal where the last one ended.

The village of Hollin Reach had a well that gave sweet water and a fishmonger who gave short weight, and it had a stranger who had come up the valley road in November with a drum of black ink and a needle roll. He drew nothing on anyone without asking, which the older women found suspicious and the younger ones found romantic. When Mirela finally showed him the bread-bag drawing, he turned it over twice, then tapped the three drops at the bottom.

"These are the part people forget," he said. "The petals hold the shape. The drops tell you it is finished, and that the weight is allowed to fall."

She thought about that all through the winter. She thought about it when the well froze and when the fishmonger was caught with a thumb on his scales. By March she had stopped counting the buttons and started listening to the rain on the roof tiles instead.

When the stranger packed his drum and walked back down the valley, Mirela went to the bakery window and watched him go. In her apron pocket the bread-bag pattern was finally smooth, and she left it there, unfolded, for the next person to find.
