Feather, birds and quote on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo on the inner upper arm combines a shaded feather on the left with five flying birds above a script quote reading 'Your wings were ready But my heart was not'. Soft grey shading forms clouds behind the lettering and around the birds, giving depth to the composition. The design is shown in a close, horizontal frame against plain skin and a blurred background.

Sit closer, lad, the fire's only good for one more log and I'll not waste my breath on the cold end of the bench. You want the bird story. Brother Anselm had the swifts under his care, the ones that nested in the bell tower above the cloister, and every August he counted them off the ledge with a stick of chalk on the flagstone, one stroke a bird, as though they were novices taking their vows.

The year the wind came from the west and stayed, the swifts gathered over the abbey roof in great grey clouds, specks turning and turning above the barley, and Anselm stood in the herb garden with his sleeves rolled and told the young ones they had to go. They were ready. Their wings had grown all summer in the dark of the eaves. The chalk strokes on the flags came to five, then to a dozen, and by the feast of Saint Bartholomew the tower was empty and the bell rope hung still.
Anselm found one feather on the cloister step the next morning, grey at the root and dark at the tip, and he kept it in his psalter as a marker. He never said a word about his own heart, though the brothers saw how he took his meals that autumn, standing by the window with his bowl going cold. Every August after that he climbed the ladder, wiped the chalk from the flags, and left the shutters open all day, in case the ones who had gone thought to come back and look.
