Ada's mother had a rule for the ferry at Wrenhaven, ever since the sea came back over the old city: nobody crossed the grey water in a hurry. The boatman, Corran Vell, had rowed that stretch for forty winters and never let his oars dip faster than the tide allowed. When a young clerk from the upper terraces came down the steps shouting that the river would take him before dark, Corran only lifted a hand towards the lock gates, where three black birds were crossing low over the water.

They flew in a loose line, sharp in the wing, unhurried, as though they had all the evening and no fear of arriving late. The clerk asked what they were. Corran said they were the troubles, going over to wait on the far bank for the people who had sent for them. They would pass, he said, if the people had the sense to let them.
The clerk laughed, paid double, and demanded to be rowed at once. Halfway across the wind died and the boat began to turn in slow circles. He pulled hard until an oar snapped in two. Corran sat with his hands folded in his lap and watched the birds slide down the sky, one after another, until the reed beds took the light and the clerk stopped shouting.
When the current finally set them against the bank, the clerk climbed out with mud to his knees and found the birds perched along a fence post, preening, in no hurry at all. He stood there until the last one lifted and followed the others east. Then he sat down in the reeds beside Corran, and the two of them waited for the dark to thin.
