Feather tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is shown in shaded grey and black ink, angled from the top of the forearm down towards the wrist. The barbs are built up with fine, layered shading that gives the quill volume, and a faint pinkish flush surrounds the outline, which may be normal healing or skin reaction. The plain skin background and a dark sleeve at the bottom edge keep the focus on the tattoo.

By the time the Maggie Rose noses past the breakwater, the gulls have already worked out who is carrying what. You stand on the slipway with a hook in one hand and your father's cap in the other, watching the birds ride the wind above the mast as if they had paid for a berth.

Your cousin Tomas says the grey feather that lands on the wet planks is a sign of luck. You say it is a gull feather and therefore a sign of nothing except that a gull is moulting. He wants to argue, but the net is coming up heavy and there is no time for it, so you both haul, and the mackerel spill silver across the deck like coins from a broken purse.
Afterwards, when the fleet is strung out along the quay and the lamps go on one by one, you pick the feather up. It is longer than a ruler, and the barbs have a sheen like wet slate where the light catches them. Tomas watches you tuck it into the band of your cap. He does not mention luck again.
The last boat in is the Ellen Mary, late and low in the water, and her skipper calls across that the weather turns by morning. You look out past the wall at the dark, where the birds have gone quiet, and you think about how a feather can carry a whole storm on its edge if you let it.
