Realistic feather tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single feather is tattooed vertically on the forearm, with a pale central shaft running its full length. The barbs are rendered with soft shading and fine dark bands across the orange and brown body of the feather, giving it a dimensional, lifelike look. The feather fills the centre of the frame against plain skin and a light blue fabric background.

Sit down before the wasps get the windfalls, and I'll tell you about the feather. Mind the grass, it's full of thistle this year. Old Mr Pryce had the orchard then, twelve rows of Bramleys running down to the brook, and every August the ground under them went brown with fallen fruit. He said the birds came for the wasps and the wasps came for the sugar, and the whole orchard was one long argument nobody ever won.

One evening his daughter Nell came up from the bottom row carrying a feather as long as her forearm. Orange as a conker split open, barred with dark smoke where the low sun caught it. She said a kestrel had dropped it on the wall by the gate, and she'd watched the bird go over the hedge with the light behind it. Her father turned it slowly in his fingers. The shaft ran pale and straight as a darning needle, and every barb sat in its place as if someone had counted them.

He kept it in the cupboard above the cider press, between the ledger and a jar of cloves. When the orchard was sold and the trees pulled for houses, Nell went looking for it and found only a few dark bands gone soft in the damp. But she remembered the bird. Last August she found another on the wall by the gate, and she pressed it flat between the pages of her hymnal and walked home by the brook, still holding the book shut.
