Feather with flying birds and script
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a large feather with fine, shaded barbs rendered in soft greys, with a second feather beneath it and a fading shadow along the edge. Three small birds fly up from the top right, and a cursive script runs diagonally beside the feather, with a single word in a looping hand at the bottom. The photograph is taken at an angle with warm, uneven lighting, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

Dear Oskar,

The feather was caught on the barbed wire outside Carrow Wells, just where the tarmac gives out and the road turns to packed red grit. It was longer than my forearm and grey all the way down, the barbs still tight enough that the wind couldn't pull them apart. I nearly left it there. Then three birds came up off the salt pan behind me, all at once, the way starlings lift off the car park at the back of the chapel, and I stood in the road with my hand still on the wire like an idiot.
I drove after them for six miles. They kept just ahead of the bonnet, low and steady, and every time the heat shimmer swallowed them I'd find them again higher up, dark specks against a sky the colour of dishwater. You always said the words on Dad's gate meant something about wings, and I told you that was showing off. I'm not so sure now. Near the hills they peeled away to the west, one after another, and I didn't feel like following.
The feather is in the glovebox with the ration receipts and Mum's last postcard. The jerrycans in the back are full, the radio has gone to static, and I've started talking out loud to nobody just to hear a voice. I'm not coming home yet. I'm posting this from the box at Carrow Wells, where the post comes once a week if the driver remembers, and I'll put the feather in the envelope if I can bear to let it go.
Love, Nell
