The shift whistle had gone at six, but you stayed on the bank above the Calder pit long after the cage stopped, watching the spoil heaps turn copper in the last light. Your brother's boots were still by the back door in Fenwick Row, and your mother had stopped asking when you would take them to the cobbler.

Old Mr Abney, who kept the lamp room, put a slate in your hands one wet afternoon and told you to draw the road up from the dark. You made dots first, one for every shaft you had counted, then a single thin line that climbed and doubled back on itself, looping and looping, each turn a day you had spent below believing you were going nowhere. At the foot of it you drew an open flower. Abney tapped it with a grimy finger and said the lotus grew out of mud and never once complained about the mud.

The winter the Low Seam flooded, you went down with the rescue party and came up with a tin cup and nothing else. You stopped drawing after that. Then in April someone planted sweet peas on the slack heap, and they climbed the wire fence in a stubborn, crooked line that nobody had asked them to take.

That evening you sat on the bank with a pencil and the back of an old wage slip. You drew the dots, then the loops, then the flower, and when you reached the last dot you pressed hard enough to tear the paper. You lifted the pencil and, without deciding to, began the line again.
