Feather with silhouetted figures

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a feather runs diagonally across the skin, with a curling ornamental swirl at its base. Two dark silhouetted figures sit along the shaft, with soft grey shading and fine feather barbs. The image is a close, straight-on shot against a shiny plastic backdrop, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The snow had been coming down since Tuesday, and by Thursday the lane below the Fell Inn had vanished under it, so the only thing moving on the road was the feather. It came up the valley on the wind, a grey goose flight feather as long as my forearm, and it came in low over the wall with two people sitting along its spine as neatly as passengers on a barge. Mam swore it was a trick of the drifts. Dad went out with a lamp and came back wet to the knees, saying nothing, and set the feather on the bar beside the brass dish where we kept the matches.

The two riders were Eleanor Crane, who kept the bees at Scarth, and her brother Tobias, who had quarrelled with the parish about a bell. Neither would say how they had got there. They ate our broth without looking up and watched the window as if it owed them money. On the second night the feather stirred on the bar, lifted its curled end the way a cat lifts a paw, and began to brush the beams with a sound like someone turning a page.

Eleanor told me it was only ever a way home. Their mother had left the house by the river in the same kind of weather, she said, and had gone out on the wind with a single flight feather, and never come back. She had never managed to climb onto the shaft herself, but her children always could.

In the morning the thaw had come and the feather lay flat on the bar, the riders gone, a single bead of water where Tobias had sat. I still have the matchbox. It is heavier than it was.
