You will think I have lost my mind, writing to you at two in the morning from the back step of the Piccadilly flat, but the starlings have started again over the canal and I cannot sleep with them. Mrs Okonedo downstairs says they roost in the gutters of the old tram sheds and she has counted forty-one this week. I counted nine tonight, going up off the wall like a handful of thrown ash, and one of them dropped a feather on the step by my boot.

It was grey and black, longer than my hand, with a spine so fine I had to hold it up to the streetlamp to see it. I thought of Dad, who used to say a feather was only a letter the bird forgot to post. I have it here now, propped against the tin of tea. Every time the wind comes up the barbs lift and settle, as if someone were turning pages.

The thing I wanted to tell you is about the night the tram barn burned, which you were too young to remember. Dad went in for the Hollis boys' ponies. He came out with soot to the elbows and no ponies, only a feather he had found on the sill, and he said the birds had got them out through the broken skylight. That was the only plain thing he ever told me about that night, and I have never known whether to believe it.

I am not going to post this. I am going to fold it round the feather and leave it under your door on the way to the early train, and you can decide what the birds were carrying.
