Feather with swirls and dots on skin
Black and grey · Photo
A single feather with shaded barbs and a curling stem sits on pale skin, finishing in swirling lines and small dots. The design is drawn in solid black outline with some fine hatching inside the feather, and it appears to be henna-style rather than permanent ink. The composition is tall and narrow, centred on the feather with the swirls trailing downward.

The gull that landed on the foredeck of the Marigold that October had a single grey feather caught in its wing, and the cook, Ada Penhale, said it was a message from the drowned. Her husband had sailed out of Padstow and never come back, and she kept a copy of the tide tables pinned above the stove beside his last letter. The crew laughed at her, but they ate what she put in front of them. When the weather turned, she stood at the galley hatch with a wooden spoon and watched the swell lift the bow.

On the third night the lamp swung wide and the pots slid off their hooks. Ada wedged herself against the range and saw the feather come loose from the gull's wing, though the gull had long gone. It drifted down the companionway, turned once in the lamplight, and settled on the chopping board. It was black at the tip and pale at the root, and curls of soot ran down its stem like smoke off a dying fire.
She took it up and carried it to the hatch. Out in the dark a hand's breadth of water hissed past. Ada tapped the feather against the frame, three times, the way her mother used to knock on a kitchen door before coming in, and she waited.
At dawn the wind dropped. The crew found her asleep on the bench with the feather tucked behind her ear, and the galley smelled of bread, which nobody had baked. Ada never said whether her husband had answered. She only said the sea had kept the tide tables right for once.
