Female portrait with flowers and geometric collar

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pen and ink drawing on paper shows a woman's head and shoulders in profile, with a flower crown of blossoms and a braided hairstyle. A crescent moon earring and a layered geometric collar frame the composition, and fine stippled dots add texture to the hair. The drawing uses bold black outlines with grey shading and no colour.

The wreath was still wet when Ines carried it down the chapel steps, the hydrangea heads bruised and dripping onto her wrists. Her uncle had told her to leave the crown until the blossoms drank the whole night, but the bell for the saint's procession had already started, and there was nobody else left in Salinas who knew how to plait the braid so it would hold through the heat.

The collar was her grandmother's work, a stiff lattice of card fans and diamonds she had cut the summer before and kept folded in a tin under the stairs. Ines pinned it on with four brass pins while the moon still hung low over the salt pans. When she turned to the mirror by the door, the points of the card pressed against her collarbone like a row of small, patient teeth, and she decided she would not take it off, whatever anyone said.

Tomas was waiting at the bottom of the lane with the crescent moon he had cut from his father's tin plate. He fixed it to her left ear with a bent wire and said the statue of Santa Marta had gone missing from the church overnight, so the procession would have to go without her. Ines looked at the empty wooden base he pointed to through the door, then at the flowers on her own head.

She stepped into the street anyway, the moon swinging against her neck, the water from the petals running down into the collar, and the whole village turned to watch the saint they had not got.
