Masked woman with flowing hair design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing on pale paper shows a woman in an ornate masquerade mask, with pearl beads around her neck and a seashell held in her outstretched hand. Her long hair is drawn as dense, flowing curls and swirls, with dotted detailing and small leaves framing the mask. The linework is bold and even, with shading only on the mask and lips, and the composition fills the sheet diagonally.

The mask had to be finished by Friday, and Marguerite still hadn't decided whether the eyes should be gilded or left bare, so Ruth sat at the end of the pier with the paint tin between her boots and a cockle shell turning in her palm. Behind her the arcade lights stuttered on one bulb at a time. She had brought the shell up from the shingle that morning because its ridges fanned out like the brow she needed for the mask, and a string of seed pearls had come with the commission, pressed into a card envelope by a woman who didn't want to say what they were for.

Marguerite's husband had gone off the groyne in March. Ruth knew this the way she knew the price of gesso, from gossip in the chandlery, and she had decided not to mention it. The commission was for a masquerade on the first of November, a night when people in the town still hid their faces for a few hours. Marguerite wanted the hair to look like sea weather, long and rolling, with the small dots of foam she had watched from her kitchen window every evening for thirty years.
Ruth drew the curls in ink that afternoon, stroke after stroke, until her wrist ached and the light went orange over the water. She left the eyes unshaded. When Marguerite came by at dusk to see the sketch, she held it up against the sky for a long minute and said nothing. Then she reached out, took the shell from Ruth's fingers, weighed it, and walked to the rail. The tide was full. Ruth watched the pale fan go under, the last of the pearls went after it, and the curls on the paper seemed, for a moment, to lift in the wind.
