Filigree heart locket with red gem

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A heart-shaped locket with pierced filigree scrollwork hangs from a looped chain at the top, with a ribbon trailing from its base. The locket is shaded in grey and black with highlights, and its centre holds a glossy red heart that stands out as the main colour accent. A soft grey background shading surrounds the design on the skin.

Brother Anselm kept the bellows going through the whole of Lent, because the abbot had promised the wool merchant's widow a locket before Easter, and nobody in the valley of Greyhurst had ever known the abbot to break a promise. Mind the coals, lad, he told me. Silver forgives many things, but never a hurry.

I sat at the bench with the piercing punches and the little jeweller's saw while he cut the scrolls. Every curl had to be a hole first, he said, so the light could get in and the heart could be seen through its own cage. He had me file the rim until a thumb would not catch on it. The gem came from a crate of Venetian glass the carter had left in the cellar, and Anselm turned it over in his fingers for a long while before he set it, red as a cardinal's sash.

When the widow came for it, she did not open the clasp at the gate. She asked whether the ribbon at the base could trail, so that anyone walking behind her would see where it had been. Anselm said it could. He had already drawn it that way on the wax, and had already decided the ribbon would end in a loop, the way a bookmark does.

That evening, after compline, I found the loose end of the ribbon tied in a single knot, the kind the old scribes used to mark a page they meant to return to. I asked him what it meant. He said it meant nothing yet, only that some hearts are put away for a while, and silver is patient with them.
