Heart padlock and key with ribbons
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A heart-shaped padlock with a gold frame and bright red centre sits at the middle of the design, with a dark key hanging from it and a purple bow above. Black ribbons loop and trail around the padlock and key. Bold dark outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading give the tattoo a classic, illustrated look against lightly lit skin.

At ten to three the corridor lights on Ward Nine drop to their night setting, and you stand outside the linen store with a key nobody on the rota has claimed. It is old and iron, with a bow shaped like a heart, and you found it in the bottom of the sluice bin, looped through a purple hair ribbon gone grey at the edges.

Imelda, who has done nights here for thirty years, says the store padlock was replaced in 1998 and the original key went missing with it. The padlock on the door has a gold frame scratched down to brass and a red enamel heart worn pink at the edges. You try the key anyway. It turns with a dry click that makes the porter look up from his trolley.
Inside, behind the stacked blankets, there is a shoebox labelled in biro: Mrs Harker, personal, please keep. Under the lid are letters tied with black ribbon, all addressed to a Thomas at a house in Otley, none of them stamped. The last one is dated the week she was moved to Ward Nine for good, and it says only that she has found a place where the lights stay low and nobody asks what she is keeping.
You close the box, lock the door and hang the key back on its ribbon on the hook by the nurses' station, where the next person will find it. At six the day staff will arrive and the hook will look like any other hook, but you will know the ribbon has been tied twice in one night.
