Fine line carriage tattoo on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single fine line tattoo of a carriage with a rounded canopy, a small finial on top and spiral scroll wheels at the base. The linework is thin and even, drawn in a single dark ink with no shading. The design sits centrally on the side of the ribs against pale skin, with a beige bra strap and fabric visible at the edges of the frame.

Hetty Marrow had planted three seeds in the cold frame the spring her brother went to sea, and by midsummer the largest of them had sent its vines through the hedge and over the wall into Squire Orme's orchard. The wheels were curled like the tails of sleeping cats, and when she touched the spokes they gave under her thumb like wet paper. She had no horses. What she had was a jar of snails that had been eating her lettuces since May, so she set them in a row on the path, gave each one a name from the church register, and asked them, very politely, whether they would pull a lady to the Michaelmas fair.
It took them four days to reach the green, which was no slower than the squire's own horses on that road. The fiddler stopped playing when the carriage came up the lane, and nobody danced for a full minute, which Hetty counted by the church clock. At the last bell she stepped down, and the carriage began to soften at the edges the way a gourd does in the rain.
She walked home in her own boots. Behind her the snails had left a shining road the whole length of the lane, and in the morning Squire Orme's son came knocking, asking which way the carriage had gone. Hetty pointed at the wall and said the vines would be back in the spring.
