Fine line spiral symbol on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small black fine-line tattoo sits centrally on the chest, below the bust. It combines a tight spiral at the base with a short run of stacked horizontal strokes and a thin vertical line that trails down into a dotted tail. The ink is crisp and even on smooth skin, and the design is framed by a patterned fabric wrapped across the torso.

The fair pitched on Wellbrook Meadow the week the river came up, and by Thursday the water had reached the second step of Mags Tollery's caravan. She sat on the top step with a ball of tarred cord across her knees, mending the rope that held the big wheel's gondolas, because nobody else on the field would climb the ladder with the wind rising.

Her grandmother had taught her the old knot, the one the travelling families tied before a long road. You began with a coil at the root, tight as a snail's shell, then laid three short turns above it, flat and even, then a single thread running up until your hands grew tired. "Leave a tail," the old woman said, "or nobody can find where you went." Mags had thought it was a children's game until the night the ghost train's operator, a lad called Owen Vane, came up the steps white to the lips, saying his brother had gone out in a borrowed punt and not come back.
She didn't tell him it would be all right. She took his hands and tied the knot on the spare cord he carried, slowly, the way she had been shown, and made him say each part aloud: the coil, the three strokes, the line, and last the tail where the cord frayed into single threads.
They went down to the bank at first light with a lantern and the rope. The brother was found three bends downstream, caught in the willows, his hand still closed on the end of a line that somebody had tied to the punt's cleat. Owen wore the cord round his wrist for the rest of the season and never once cut the tail short.
