Fine line compass on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black compass sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. It has a thin outlined circle crossed by diagonal lines, with a long arrow pointing down through the centre and a single letter to the right. The linework is fine and even, in black ink only, set against soft blurred skin tones and a dark background.

The needle on my father's compass had gone lazy by the spring of 1947, sliding a few degrees east whenever the lamp room grew warm. I was kneeling on the gallery grating with the brass case open on my knee when Tom Pryce came up the rock path at a run, a telegram crushed in one fist and his cap in the other.

It was for the Marianne Tull, a coal coaster out of Swansea that should have raised Skerry Ness two nights before and had not. The message said only that she had been seen off the Bitter Sound with her lamps dark. Tom looked at the compass as if it might offer comfort. I told him the needle had been lying to me since Candlemas, and that a boat steered by a liar in fog would find the rocks sooner than any harbour.
I took a pencil and drew the bearing on the chart the way my father taught me: a circle, the cross of lines, the long arrow driven through the centre. Beside it I wrote the Z the mate had sent in his last signal, the letter for the zigzag channel the coasters used at low water. Then I unscrewed the bowl, tapped the pivot until it stopped sulking, and set the needle true against the iron fence post.
At dusk the lamp went up and the beam swept out over the water. I climbed to the gallery and held the compass at arm's length, the arrow steady now, pointing down past the reef to the narrow gap beyond it. An hour later a single red light crept out of the murk, wavered, then steadied, and came round the point towards the stone steps where Tom waited with a lantern of his own.
