The linework is even and fine, with a slightly hand-drawn, monoline quality and no shading. The arm is raised against a plain pale grey background, with the fist and painted dark nails visible at the top right.

Old Mrs Pennock kept the coconut shy at Lowther Green for forty years, and every October she let the fair move on without her. Her grandson Tobias wanted the caravan with the faded red wheels, so he asked what the old woman would take for it. She said nothing. She only pointed a bent finger at the word painted across the shutter in curling letters: timshel. Tobias asked what it meant. Thou mayest, she said. That was the whole price she named.

He took it for a riddle, the way fairground folk told riddles, and spent the winter trying to solve it. He found the word in a dusty book about a farmer and his two sons, where it was spoken between brothers. It was not thou shalt or thou shalt not, but thou mayest, which left the choosing with whoever stood there. In spring he hauled the caravan onto the field behind the church and opened the shutter each morning to ordinary people who needed a reason to come back.
Years later a man came to the shy with a boy on his shoulders. That morning the boy had shouted at his brother and never taken it back. The man lost three rings at the coconuts and swore at them. Tobias handed him one more ball without a word. The boy wriggled free and ran off across the grass, and the man stood a long while watching him go.
When the man finally shook Tobias's hand and went looking for the boy, Tobias kept the caravan and the word stayed on the shutter. Nobody asked him about it any more. Some things need no explaining, he said, only a choice.
