Script quote along the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote runs diagonally up the inner forearm, from near the wrist towards the elbow, with the wording partly visible. The linework is thin and even, with no visible shading, and the ink is a dark blue-black against pale skin. A wristwatch sits above the tattoo, and a car steering wheel and dashboard fill the background.

She had practised those words a hundred times on scrap vellum. Loved by the King. Corbel said the Crown liked the flourish because it told the county that mercy had been granted by affection rather than by law. The man named in the pardon was a carter called Tobias Wren, who could not read it. The turnkey would read it to him aloud, Corbel said, and he would probably laugh.
The courier unrolled the page under a lantern on the coach step and went very still. The pardon was for the wrong Wren. Hester had copied the name from a list in her own cramped writing, and she had been careless with the ruling that week. Nobody would hang for it, not yet. But the king's love had been written onto a man who was still to be hanged, and the sentence stood.
She walked home through the frost with ink under her nails. In the window of the chandler's shop her reflection looked back at her, the letters of her own sleeve backwards in the glass. She practised the capitals on the frosted pane with one finger until the sun came up, the same loop again and again, until her hand would not bend.
