Fine line sprig on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig of wildflower or herb with a thin central stem and several tiny round buds is tattooed in black ink on the side of the torso. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the design is set against a neutral skin tone. The composition is tightly framed around the tattoo, with a grey jumper sleeve and a cream fabric edge at the top and sides.

The wind has turned, Thessaly says, not looking up from the wall where she kneels among the marjoram. Pick the stems before the goats find them, and be quick, because the seed heads will split by noon. You do as you are told, as you always do, and the grit of the harbour road works into your sandals while the gulls argue over fish heads by the mole.

She works faster than you. Her knife moves in short, certain strokes, and each cut stem is laid in your basket with its flower heads facing the same way, as if they might be counted. When you ask why the physician from Halicarnassus went away with nothing, though he offered three silver drachmae and a jar of good Chian wine, she only shrugs. He wanted it for a potion to bring back a man who had sailed off to Rhodes. She has no patience for potions, she says, and less for men who cannot find their own way home.

Later, when the sun is high and the shop smells of crushed leaves, you take one sprig from the basket that is not meant for drying. Its stem is thin as a hair and its buds are still closed, small round knots waiting for a warmer week. You carry it down to the sea wall, where sailors tuck coins and pebbles into the cracks for Hermes to find, and you wedge it into the mortar above the tide line with a fragment of broken tile.

In spring you pass the wall again. Among the salt-bleached weeds there is one stem standing straighter than the rest, and at its top, the buds have finally opened.
