Three small birds on a woman's back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind with her bare back toward the camera, one hand resting on her shoulder. A small tattoo of three black silhouetted birds in flight sits on the right side of her back, between the shoulder blade and the waist. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the image is in a muted, low-contrast colour palette with the tattoo the only ink visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the third stair, it still thinks it's a gangway. You'll have the back room, the one that looks over the harbour wall, and the gulls will wake you at five whether you like it or not. My husband's father used to say the birds were the boarding house's rent. Three of them, always, skimming low across the slip, as if they were carrying a message nobody had bothered to read.

The story goes back to the winter of the big blow, when the Marigold went out after pollack and never came in. Three men aboard: Tobias Rand, his brother Eli, and a boy called Corran who'd only signed on because his mother needed the coal money. The whole town stood on the wall for two days. On the third morning three terns came over the breakwater, black against the grey, and circled the harbour mouth until the tide turned. Then they went out past the lighthouse and did not come back.

Nobody could say for certain it was the Marigold's men. Old Hannah Rand, Tobias's widow, swore they were the men themselves, going on ahead to find the channel for the boats that followed. She kept a lamp lit in the front window for thirty years. When she died, they found a little wooden bird under her pillow, painted black, no bigger than a thumb. It's in the dresser drawer downstairs. You're welcome to hold it, but mind the wing, it's the only piece that came loose.

So when you hear them at five, don't curse them. Count them. If there are three, the harbour is fine and the kettle is hot. If there are only two, you come down and knock on my door, and we'll sit by the range and talk about who might be coming home.
