Firefighter emblem on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A Maltese cross firefighter emblem with the letters F and D on the arms and FIRE and FIGHTER on the banners. At the centre, crossed axes, a ladder and a helmet sit inside a rope-edged circle. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys and highlights giving the metal and lettering a raised, three-dimensional look.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the candle, because the snow has been at the shutters since noon and I will not tell this one twice. Harrow Gate had a fire company once, four men and a cart with a brass pump the parish bought off a Dutch merchant for the price of a good heifer. They wore black helmets with the brims turned down against the sparks, and they carried the axes and the long ladder on their shoulders through the lanes.

The worst night was in the February of the hard winter, when the mill on Coldbeck caught from a lamp some fool had left lit beside the flax. Wind came off the moor like a flat hand slapping. Old Tobias Venn ran up the ladder first, because he was the only one who had ever climbed anything higher than a hay rick, and he cut the rope on the loft hatch so the bales could fall away from the stair. Men say the blade rang like a bell in that cold.

When the sun came up grey over the ruins, they found the helmet of the youngest lad hanging on a hook by the door, singed black but whole, and nobody could say who had put it there. Tobias took it down, turned it over in his hands, and then bolted the emblem of the cross and its banners to the lintel of the engine house, so that whoever came in out of the snow would know what sort of men kept that door.

Which is why, if you go to Harrow Gate today, you will find the cross still hanging there, its rope edge worn smooth by a hundred winters. Now bank that fire up, and someone fetch the old man his cup, for he is not as young as his voice.
