Anchor with rope and 1970 est. banner on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey anchor is wrapped in rope and has a banner reading EST. across its shank, with the date 1970 above it. Bold outlines are filled with grey shading, and stylised water swirls rise on either side of the anchor. The tattoo is shown head-on and fills the centre of the frame against plain skin.

The bosun at Tilbury never once asked me what the date meant, and I never told him. Some nights on the Lysander's old run to Bilbao I'd sit on the fo'c'sle hatch with the rope coil between my boots and count the years back to the year the ship was launched, which was not 1970 but near enough to be a lie that everyone agreed to. Nobody aboard had been born then except the cook, and he swore the galley range was older than the both of us.

The anchor was the one thing the Lysander kept from her breaking-up. Cutler, the second mate, had it hauled up from the yard in a sling and bolted to the foredeck, and when the paint went grey with salt he would scrub it with a wire brush and a bucket of vinegar, muttering that a ship without a stone-cold anchor was just a bathtub with ambitions. He'd tell anyone who stood still long enough that the banner across the shank said EST. because he'd argued with the owners for a week about the rest of the word and lost.
We lost the ship in the end, not to weather but to paperwork. The last night in port I went down to the hold to check the chain locker one more time, and I found Cutler sitting on a crate with a torch in his teeth, tracing the rope pattern on his own forearm in biro. He didn't look up. He said the anchor would still be holding ground somewhere once the hull was scrap, because a thing like that doesn't ask permission to stay put. Then he capped the pen and held his arm out for me to read the date he'd written there, the wrong one, and we both laughed until the night watchman came down to shush us.
