Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a man's forearm and hand, with blue, orange and yellow flames rising from the wrist up to the elbow. On the wrist sits a flaming skull with a gold banner reading BORN and BAD. The flames are shaded with soft gradients and the skull has detailed highlights, set against a blurred grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ruth, the Dodge came off the trailer at Salt Pan Wells on Tuesday with its flames still tacky under the clear coat, and I have not slept properly since. You told me once that flames are only fire that has been asked nicely to stay in one place. I think you were right, and I think that is why the orange never sat right until I stopped fighting the brush and let it go where the heat wanted to go.

Gil Mercer wanted a skull on the driver's door, grinning, with a gold scroll banner under it. He had me paint BORN across the top and BAD across the bottom, which he said was the whole of his philosophy and a fair summary of his mother. I told him the scroll would crack where the handle curves. He told me to paint it anyway, so I did, and it has not cracked yet.

We took it out along the old 14 to test the paint, forty miles of white road with the heat rising off it in sheets. At the lay-by a boy on a red bicycle stopped to watch the flames catch the sun. Gil waved him over and let him sit behind the wheel with his hands at ten and two while the engine ticked over. Nobody got hurt. Nobody needed to.

I am posting you the photo of the door, so you can tell me the skull's teeth are too big. They are. I left them that way on purpose. Give the girls my love and tell the dog he can have the last of the ham. Yours, Dell.
