Fleur-de-lis tattoo on lower stomach

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large fleur-de-lis is tattooed on the lower stomach, with its outline and inner areas filled with small floral and scroll patterns. The linework is fine and the shading is grey, giving the design a lace-like texture. The emblem sits centred on the skin, with a navel piercing and jeans visible at the edges of the frame.

The frost had drawn lilies on every pane by the time Agnes Thorne woke, scrolled and looping like the lace her mother used to sew onto Candlemas caps. Outside, the ewes stood in a crooked ring by the gate, their breath rising in small grey clouds. Her brother Tom had gone to the market at Stoke Lacy three days before and had not come back, and the flour was nearly gone.

Her grandmother used to say that frost only drew patterns where something warm was breathing underneath. So Agnes wrapped her shawl twice, took the lantern and the iron key, and followed the lace across the window glass, down the yard and through the furrows to the old well at the edge of Hollin field. The pattern thickened there, petal over petal, until the whole stone rim was furred white. She knelt and scraped the rime away with her glove.

Beneath it, wedged between two stones, was Tom's red scarf. When she pulled it free, a voice came up out of the dark, hoarse but plainly his, saying her name as if he had been saying it all night. His boot had caught on a ledge where the well was dug too narrow to climb.

She tied the rope to the gatepost the way her grandmother had taught her, and by the time the lantern guttered, Tom was standing in the yard with frost on his collar. The next morning Agnes set a loaf on the sill, and the glass clouded over and drew its lilies again around the bread.
