Lace-pattern butterfly on the lower back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A butterfly in mid-flight with wings filled with a fine lace-like pattern of black linework, small flower motifs and scrolling details, with small pale dots at the centre of the flowers. The wings have soft grey shading that gives a slight three-dimensional drop shadow against the skin. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, shown in a close, slightly angled photograph on pale skin.

The bobbins have been clicking since before the tide turned, and you are the only one still awake in the loft above the lace-room, hunched over a pricking the colour of weak tea. Your mother's pencil is still in the margin, a butterfly half-drawn with its wings folded. Down on the quay the lamp swings over the schooner Arabella Vane, taking on casks for Valparaiso, and the captain's wife has ordered a veil with wings.

You work the ground in half-stitch, a net so fine it hangs between the flowers like rain caught on a window. Each wing is its own cushion of pins, and every pin is a decision you cannot unmake. When the flower heads go in, you press your thumb to the centre of each one, the way she taught you, so the pale dot holds its place. Forty hours of this, and the wind has shifted twice.
On the morning the schooner sails you walk the cliff path with the parcel under your arm. The sea is the grey of the lace's shadow, a grey that folds over itself. You watch the hull shrink until it is a pin-head on the horizon, and you think of the butterfly lifted off its cushion and wrapped in tissue, somewhere below deck, carried south in the dark.
Six months later a letter comes with a sketch of a harbour you have never seen and one line in a stranger's hand: the wings held in the wind. You take down the pricking and trace the last pin hole with your thumb, feeling for the place where the lace began.
